Biography

William Hamilton, son of William Hamilton (abt.1705-1762) and his 2nd wife, Alice (Mann) Hamilton (1710-1800), was born in April 1740 in Dublin, Leinster, Ireland, when the family were en route from Co. Down, Ulster, Ireland, to Virginia.

William Hamilton was an American patriot and Captain during the American Revolution. At the end of that conflict, he married Ruth Wilson (1760-1848) on 12 January 1783 in Botetourt County, Virginia, USA. The family had a farm in Botetourt, then moved to Kentucky around 1790 when it became a US state. The couple had 8 children:[1]

  1. Andrew H Hamilton, 1784–1844
  2. William Hamilton, 1786–1877
  3. James Hamilton, 1788–Deceased
  4. Samuel Hamilton, 1791–1860
  5. Mary W. Hamilton, 1793–Deceased
  6. Abraham H. Hamilton, 1798–Deceased
  7. John Bryd Hamilton, 1801–1874
  8. Ruth Wilson (Hamilton) Chiles (1803-1870)

Captain William Hamilton Jr., passed away on 8 April 1834 on his farm in Boone County, Kentucky, USA. He had lived a long life and was 94 years old when he died. He was no doubt buried on his farm but the grave site has been lost. [2] His wife survived his passing. Ruth (Wilson) Hamilton passed away on 23 August 1848 at 88 years old in Warsaw, Gallatin County, Kentucky, USA. Her burial site is also not known but presumably she was buried next to her late husband. [3]
