Hugh Hamilton FRS was a mathematician, natural philosopher (scientist) and professor at Trinity College Dublin.
Hugh was born in 1729, the son of Alexander Hamilton and Isabella Maxwell.
He was educated by Mr Garnett and entered Trinity College Dublin on 17 November 1742, aged 14. B.A. 1747, M.A. 1750, Fellow 1751, B.D. 1759, D.D. 1762, Professor of Natural Philosophy 1759. [1]
In his twenty-second year was elected a Fellow of Trinity College, Dublin ; and afterwards became Erasmus Smith's Professor of Natural Philosophy in the University. He was Rector of St. Anne's parish, Dublin. His patent for the deanery of Armagh was dated 23 April 1768. [Lib. Mun.] He was instituted 27th; installed May 20th. In 1796 he was raised to the bishopric of Clonfert and Kilmacduagh by patent dated January 20th. He was consecrated in the Chapel of Trinity College, Dublin, on January 31st, by the Archbishop of Tuam, assisted by the Bishops of Killala and Elphin. He was enthroned by proxy. After two years, he was translated to Ossory. The patent for his translation to Ossory is dated 24 January. He was the author of several treatises on mathematical and philosophical subjects.
Hugh married in 1772 Isabella Widman Wood, daughter of Hans Widman Wood of Rosmead, County Westmeath and Frances King.

He died at Kilkenny, on 1 December 1805, and was buried in his Cathedral.
