Biography for Eliza Jane Hamilton

When Eliza Jane Hamilton was born on November 19, 1878, in Franklin, Pennsylvania, her father, Phillip Hamilton , was 40 and her mother, Mary Lewis , was 28. [1]

She married Andrew Brown Painter on 19 Oct 1898. [2]

Eliza's first-born son, Phillip, was born on AUGUST 7, 1900 [5], Westmoreland Eliza she gave birth to Harry Eldred. [6]

Interestingly, when I was writing the Painter Family Album in 2015-16, I tried to find out what happened to Phillip and Eliza. By this time none of Andrew Brown's children were living. Two of the oldest members of the family were Harry Eldred's two sons, Clyde (1929-) and Dennis Painter (1938-). Dennis and I spoke frequently and he spoke with his brother Clyde, who was ill and reported back to me. Clyde was positive that his father was the oldest of the children. He was also sure that his father was the only child of Eliza. [7] Although this information is not factual, it is understandable as to why this was the story passed down to Clyde and Dennis. Their father Harry Eldred was born in 1903. By that time, his younger brother Phillip was already dead. His mother passed away when Harry was 2 years old. He would have no memory of his brother and very little of his mother. Then memories passed down to Clyde and Dennis would be foggy at best. One issue that Clyde was told was that his father's mother Eliza's and her sister Clara, who became Harry's stepmother, were twins. This is not true as verified by census reports. [8]

She died as a young mother in 1905 in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, at the age of 27, and was buried in Irwin, Pennsylvania. [9][10]

Hi Angela,

I believe that there is a mistake in the parents of Eliza and Clara Hamilton. Phillip Hobaugh Hamilton and Mary Jane Lewis were the parents after checking the McLaughlin line I can see where it is confusing, since there is an Eliza Jane Hamilton listed as living in their house in 1880. However if you check the dates, that Eliza was seven and our Eliza was one in 1880. I have a different 1880 census that lists Elizabeth (Eliza). It would be great if we could collaborate on this profile Nikki
