[Slowly but surely this family's genealogy is evolving, but it still needs a lot of work. It's unlikely, for instance, that the first two children (James and Robert) were born before their mother turned 10 years old! Or that there would be a gap of 15 years to the next child, and that four of them (Archie, John, William, and James) would have been born in the same year, or that Andrew, Mary Ann, Nancy, and Agnes were also born the same year. Likewise, there appear to be several duplicates, as well as very poor sourcing. There are some cases made with these parents and children, but those cases are not generally cohesive. There is one good possibility in James, born 1735 in Scotland, who is pretty well documented. His mother was thought to be Jean Walker, perhaps the first wife of our William Hamilton. James was born in Hamilton, Scotland, in 1735. However, if this is truly their son, then William left him behind when he came to American in 1737. In truth, there appears here to be some very bad genealogy extending back to the advent of internet ancestry sites in the late 1990s. Caution advised.]
William Hamilton married his 2nd wife, Alice Mann in County Tyrone, Ulster, Ireland in 1735. The family was of Scots origin and Presbyterian Protestant in religion. They first lived in neighboring County Down, Ulster, Ireland.
Mary Jane, their oldest daughter was born 1737 in County Down, Ulster, Ireland, before the family emigrated to America. She had two brothers: Andrew, b: 1736 and John, b: ca. 1739.[1]
After their first children were born in County Down, Ulster, Ireland, William and Alice (Mann) Hamilton emigrated to America, arriving in New Castle, Delaware, in 1741. They had a 2nd daughter, Alice Mann, born there in 1742 and then moved to Pennsylvania. Around 1750, with many other Scots-Irish pioneers, they moved south along the Great Wagon Road to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. They were among the early settlers of Kerr's Creek, then in Augusta County; later to be included in Rockbridge County, Virginia.[2]
Jane Hamilton survived the frequent Indian attacks that killed several of her extended family in this period. Around 1755, when she was 17 or 18 years old, Jane married William Mann Sr. (1731-1778), in Botetourt County, Virginia. He was probably a cousin of her mother, whose maiden name was Mann. It's likely he had followed the same migration pattern as her family. The couple had a farm in Botetourt County, Virginia, and William Mann was also a Weaver and Indian Trader. They had 8 known children:[3]
William Mann Sr., died on March 20, 1778, in Botetourt County, Virginia, USA. Jane (Hamilton) Mann survived his passing. She died in Falling Spring, Bath, Virginia, USA, in September 1813. No Find A Grave memorials have been found for either of this couple of American pioneers.
