Biography

Claud (Hamilton) Hamilton IVth of Broomhill is a member of Clan Hamilton.

Claud was the son of John Hamilton and Elizabeth Hamilton.^[1]

He married Margaret, daughter of James Hamilton of Kilbrachmont.^[2][3][4] They had issue:

3. Margaret, m. James Baillie of Carrenbrow^[4]
4. Janet, second daughter, m. Major James Somervell, a son of Cambusnethan's
5. Isobell, 3rd daughter, m. James Skeen, Clerk of Session^[4]
6. Jean, youngest daughter, m. John Hamilton of Gilkerscleuch^[4]

He also had a natural son:

Claud died in 1605.^[2]

Research Notes

Although James Balfour Paul is considered reliable, he certainly was not infallible and his treatment of the Broomhill line is one of those instances. It seems to best authority here is Birnie. Anderson, who has also covered the Broomhill line subsequently corrected his work in response to Birnie who was working with the original charters. Cokayne appears to be correct in his Baronetage
