Research Notes

The land records attached to this profile describe 2 land transactions. 1) an initial survey in 1805 to William Hamilton in Livingston county Kentucky, and 2) a sale from William Hamilton, in Jackson county Tennessee, selling this exact parcel of land to Samuel and Thomas Armstrong, heirs to Alexander Armstrong, who provided for the purchase of this land in his will.

Alexander is neighbor to John Hamilton in Livingston Kentucky. Two sons of John Hamilton married two daughters of Alexander Armstrong. In Alexander Armstrong's will, he describes the land he is buying for his sons as the land he is currently living on. The early date of survey for this land of 1805 indicates it is for the William Hamilton Jr that shows up in early Livingston tax records.[1] By 1810, both of William's parents had passed, and we find him living neighbor to several of his brothers[2] It is quite likely that the William Hamilton found in the 1820-1860[3][4][5][6][7] Jackson county censuses, who is consistently born in or around 1779, is brother to John Hamilton of Livingston county Kentucky.

He is often conflated with a different William Hamilton (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hamilton-791) on many on-line trees. Many records from Jackson county during William's life have not survived, so there appears to have been some guesswork in his origins. This land record, which was filed in both Jackson county and Livingston county, is a surviving document.

There are documented children for William and his wife Mary. A Bible record for this family is erroneously connected to the Ancestry version of Wiki profile Hamilton-791.[8] It lists the following family members:

A previous 1st wife for William (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Rogers-38657) has been removed based on information found in the Hamilton DNA project.[9] which has that William as a clearly different person who is father to a Joshua H. Hamilton. However, other on-line trees[10] indicate the Joshua Hamilton said to be son to William Hamilton and Elizabeth Rogers on the Hamilton DNA project is actually son to William Hamilton and Elizabeth Dickerson. The spouse for Joshua is different for each version, as is the birthdate, so it is not determined at this time if the marriage record for William and Sarah Rogers in 1800 Blount TN is for this profile or for the father of Joshua (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hamilton-23377)
