Do we have any idea who this man and his wife were?

We do not have any information about him other than the sparse line attributing ancestry found in the "Commemorative Biographical Record of Fairfield County". This book is not a scholarly work; the Preface states "[i]n nearly every instance the material composing the sketches was gathered from those interested, and then submitted in type-written form for correction and revision." There are no footnotes or bibliography, so the above quote from the Preface is the only confirmation of the source of information. This is not reliable, and the WikiTree profile of William Hamilton leans on other similar unresearched volumes and remains in want of actual record citations. Gallatin is a Swiss surname that

"Abstract of probate records at Fairfield, Connecticut : down to 1721", a compiled abstraction of will book records from Fairfield, there are records as early as 1672-1674 of a William Hamilton concerning a runaway indentured servant who had belong to him. In 1673, this William Hamilton was witness to the release of Edward Nash from indenture to Thomas Barlow.

We need a definitive timeline of William Hamilton's locations and movements if we want to have a chance at discovering his origins. The lack of cited records for William Hamilton in any place online is baffling but presents an opportunity.
