Lafayette was born 1847 in Marshall County, Tennessee to Dickson S. Hamilton and Margaret T. Bloodworth Hamilton. The family moved to Caldwell County, Kentucky before 1850. Layfayette enlisted on the Union side of the Civil War as a Private in the 17th Regiment of the Kentucky Cavalry. After the war he married Elizabeth Bradshaw and they made their home in Eddyville, Lyon County, Kentucky near the rest of the Hamilton/Hildreth families. He was listed as a farmer on the 1870 Lyon County Census. In November 1887 a military pension was issued.
