First name is sometimes recorded as Williamina.
Wilhelmina is recorded in the 1880 Federal Census for New York City at 13 years of age, living in the home of her parents John L. and Marguerette C. Hamilton. Her father was listed at that time as a builder, her older brother Thomas as a carpenter, and her older brother Alexander as a clerk. She and her two younger sisters were listed as attending school. Her parents were born in Scotland. All the children of the family were born in New York state. This record was taken 4 June 1880.
A US passport application for her father survives in which Wilhelmina is included as a 14-year old girl. The application is dated 18 December 1880 and granted 20 December of that year. There is no indication of where they planned to travel. But it does include the information that John L. Hamilton became a naturalized citizen of the US on 27 April 1868.
