Biography

Jane Lyon Hamilton is recorded in the 1880 Federal Census for New York City at 11 years of age, living in the home of her parents John L. and Marguerette C. Hamilton. Her father was listed at that time as a builder, her older brother Thomas as a carpenter, and her older brother Alexander as a clerk. She and her two young sisters were listed as attending school. Her parents were born in Scotland. All the children of the family were born in New York state. This record was taken 4 June 1880.

A marriage record survives which probably can be attributed to Jane. This marriage took place in Manhattan on 28 Feb 1894 between Jeannie or Gennie Lyon Hamilton and Hugh L. Weber. Some sources give the names of the bride's parents as John Hamilton and Margaret Hall. While it's possible that there was either a Jenny or Jean in the family in addition to Jane, it is more likely that all records refer to a single person.

In any case, the marriage record certainly refers to a child of this family. A society note in The World newspaper spells the bride's name as Jennie Hamilton. It also indicates that the groom's parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. Weber traveled to New York from St. Louis for the wedding. Hugh L. Weber had a brother named Frederic Weber, and the bride had two young nephews: Thomas Lyon Hamilton, and John Hamilton Drummond.

The 1915 New York State census shows a Janie or Jenie L. Weber living in a household with her husband Hugh L. Weber. This household is listed next after two households headed by known members of the Hamilton family. The first was headed by Agnes Curry, and the second by the widowed Margaret H. Hamilton.
