"What I personally remember - my grandfather telling me about coming to Canada when he was 5 and he remembered bits and pieces of the trip over. He also remembered a trip back to Europe at one point. I know he was in the army and this had them moving around during the war, which was how my dad ended up being born in New Denver instead of Vancouver. My grandfather was friends with my grandmother's brothers, which is how they met. They moved around quite a bit in the war years and after, until they retired to Vancouver.
We visited them a lot on our Sunday visits. I remember getting to take apart their "junk" as a child. My grandfather had cool "toys" - cassette tape recorders, musical instruments. He would let us play with them, recording all kinds of goofy stuff.
When I was 17 and left home, he called me up and asked me to help drive across Canada. This did a lot for my self-esteem, but not much for my nerves. I was a cranky 17 y/o and he would spent the evenings drinking, which I hated. By the time we got to Ottawa we were barely companionable. But I was grateful for the opportunity to get out of Vancouver for awhile. That was the first time I met the Elliott's.
After grandma died, Grandpa and Eileen travelled quite a bit. Sometimes they went with each other, sometimes with other people - Grandpa and Bruce went to South America, among other places. They tried living in a few cities, including Ottawa and Vancouver.
Eventually Grandpa and Eileen settled in Edmonton which is where they both died. We visited them at least once a year when the kids were small."
