Jane or Jean Joyce was most likely to have been born in Amelia County, Province of Virginia, about 1734, (this gives her probable age of 24 when she was married) since Prince Edward County was not formed until 1754. She married Alexander Joyce on 19 May 1758 in Prince Edward County, Province of Virginia.[1] They could have even been married in Buffalo Creek Church, where he was an elder, and just a few miles north of his land in Lunenburg County,[2] where he owned 800 acres of land.
In 1760, Alexander bought 640 acres of land in Rowan County, North Carolina, on the both sides of the Mayo River, and they moved there shortly after.[3] Alexander and Jane had seven children: Esther (b, 1750), Elisha (b.1762), Andrew (b.1765), Robert (b. 1768), Margaret (b.1770). Elizabeth (b. 1772), and Mary (b. 1775).
Alexander dies in 1778, and mentions Jane in his will.[4] He lends her 240 acres of land, the plantation on which she lives, four slaves, a saddle and bridle, and half ownership of a still. He also leaves her with very small children.
Jane (Jean) also makes a will in 1783 coveying in natural love and affection to her four daughters (Esther Bryson, Margaret, Elizabeth, and Mary) cows and calves, slaves, one-half of a still together, and household furniture.[5] The will is not probated until November 1804, so Jane dies shortly before then.
