John Hammett Sr was a Virginia colonist.

John Hammett was born in Stafford County, Virginia, about 1735/37. He was a son of William Hammett, Jr. and Catherine Elizabeth Jones.[1][2]

In 1759, he married Sarah Underwood in Virginia.[3] This is a partial list of their children:[2]

  1. Mary Jane (1760-1843)
  2. James (1761-1860)
  3. John Ferguson (1761-1834)
  4. George (1761-1840)
  5. Elizabeth (1763-1822)
  6. Sarah (1765-1850)
  7. Jessie (1768-1818_
  8. Ellender (1774-1859)
  9. Mary Polly (1775-1845)

Their children were born in Virginia, before the war. John was no doubt involved in the Revolution, and he is probably the Lt. John Hammett whose name is listed on the war rolls of Spencer's Regiment.[4]

By 1790, the Hammets had moved to Spartanburg County, South Carolina.[5]

The earliest date found on the estate papers[6] of John Hammett is 1834. He probably died before then, but after the 1820 census[7]
