Biography

Claud T Hammock was born in Florida, probably in 1876. The official enumeration date of the 1880 US Census was 1 June. On that census, Claud T was recorded as being the 3 year old son of George W Hammack,.^[1] having had his third birthday in Aug 1879. Also living in the home were wife Mary L (age 23) and siblings Florance V (age 6) and Sarah W (age 1). It is presumed that Claud is Mary's son.^[2] The family was living in Precinct 2 of Hillsborough County, Florida, United States of America, which is the part of Hillsborough County that became Pinellas County in 1912. George was recorded as a 29 year old farmer. Claud, like his parents, siblings, and maternal grandparents, were born in Florida. His father's family was from Georgia.^[1]

The surname was recorded as Hammack on the 1885 Florida State census. Claude, 10 years old, was still living at home with H.[sic] W. (34) and M. L. (29), sisters Florence (12) and Sarah (8), as well as two additional siblings, Henry (6) and Bertina (4). Living next door was Claude's maternal grandfather, R. J. Whitehurst.^[3]

When the 1900 Census enumeration occurred, there was not a child named Claud living with George and Marry Hammock.^[4]

An unsourced Family Group Sheet was found in the files of the Meares Family. There is no indication who filled out the form. The information is consistent with family lore and has been found to accurately record documents found to date. However, not all pieces of information have been verified.
