Biography

George Hammond was born 24 Jun 1734 in Rochester, Plymouth, Massachusetts Bay Colony, the son of Rowland Hammond and Ann Winslow. On 16 Nov 1758, in Plymouth, he married Lucy Sturtevant, and together they had six children.

  2. Anne (Hammond) Bridgham (1762–1799)
  3. Molly Hammond (1764–1783)
  4. Lucy (Hammond) Bridgham (1766–1842)
  5. George Hammond (1768–1795)
  6. Hannah (Hammond) Mendell (1770–1810)

Lucy died in 1772, at age 34, leaving George a widower with six young children. The following year, on 25 Nov 1773, he married Betty Thomas, and with Betty had four more children.

  3. Benjamin Hammond (1778–1825)
  4. Priscilla (Hammond) Ward (1781–1826)

George died in Plymouth on 14 Jan 1782, at only 47 years old. He is buried with both wives at Lakenham Cemetery, Carver, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.

Probate

George Hammond of Plymton, gentleman, died intestate and on 4 March 1782, his widow Betty was granted the administration of his estate.[1]

His inventory was taken on 29 April 1782. It included things that his daughter Anna and Lydia had towards their portion of his estate.[2]

In 1786, an account of his estate by his widow Betty was recorded which included, the sale of real estate, debts paid, cost of Mary Hammond's sickness and funeral charges, necessaries for the widow, provisions for the family, and administration fees.[3]

The land that he held in common with Rowland Hammond was divided. Then his estate was set out to his widow Betty, and his children, George Hammond (eldest son), Lydia Murdock, wife of James Murdock, Jr., Anna Bridgham, wife of William Bridgham, Lucy Hammond, Hannah Hammond, Betty Hammond, Thomas Hammond, Benjamin Hammond, and Priscilla Hammond.[4]

In 1786, his widow Betty was appointed guardian of his minor children, Betty Hammond, Thomas Hammond, Benjamin Hammond, and Priscilla Hammond. all under the age of 14 years.[5] In 1787, Perez Thomas of Middleborough was appointed guardian of his children.[6]
