Biography

Family Folklore

The family folklore passed down to this family line is that Noah Hammond is the son of three minister brothers who came over from England. Another family branch speculates that Noah Hammond's father is the Rev. Noah Hammond of Coram, Long Island but this has not been proven with documentation. A posting on Familysearch.org states, again without documented proof, that Noah Hammond is from the Basking Ridge Somerset, NJ region where his wife Anna Breese was born. One other source, the Orange County Portrait and Biographical Record lists William Hammond's great grandfather Noah Hammond as "supposed to have been born in England. " But 'supposed' is not the same as 'was.' The origins of Noah Hammond may never be verified. Rev. Noah Hammond of Coram Long Island remains the most likely candidate as he did have a son Noah born in 1743. This evangelical preacher did extend his ministry into Sussex County, NJ. More research is needed.
