Biography

Birth

Nathaniel Hammond was christened on 12 March 1643 in Hingham, Plymouth, Massachusetts Bay. His father was listed as Thomas Hammond. [1][2]

Marriage

Nathaniel married Mary Griffin by 1666. [3]

Nathaniel Hammond died on 29 May 1691 in Newton, Middlesex, Massachusetts at age 48. [4][2]

Children

Nathaniel & Mary (Griffin) Hammond had the following children, recorded in Newton [5] (their final two are poorly documented, thus additional substantive research is encouraged):

  1. Mary Hammond, b. 15 Dec 1672
  2. Sarah (Hammond) Williams (1675-1751), b. 3 Oct 1675
  3. Nathaniel Hammond II (1679-1749), b. 26 Jan 1678
  4. Elizabeth (Hammond) Truesdell (1683-1754), b. 11 Mar 1682
  5. Esther (Hammond) Avery (1684-1752), b. 1684
  6. Thomas Hammond (1686-1753)
  7. Hanah, b. 31 Mar 1689

Notes

This profile was initially created to describe the Nathaniel Hammond, spouse of Mary French, thus the parents of Sarah Hammond as noted by Wheeler (1900) in his History of Stonington, p. 663 [6]. Recent research centered upon the relevant Sarah Hammond has demonstrated that the Wheeler reference is in error on that relationship (Sarah Hammond was a daughter of Mary Griffin), hence Mary French is now detached as the spouse of this Nathaniel Hammond.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Nathaniel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Nathaniel:

Hammond-819 and Hammond-177 appear to represent the same person because: Both profiles represent the spouse of Mary Griffin, thus the father of Sarah (Hammond) Williams.
