Lilburn Newton Hampton was born on March 2, 1860 in Moniteau County, Missouri, United States, son of Job Hampton (1824–1893) and Mary K. Renfrow (1826–1912).

His siblings were:

Lilburn (18) married Mary Frances Smith (10) (born on March 9, 1868 in Prairie Home Township, Cooper, Missouri, United States) on November 7, 1878 in Moniteau, Missouri, United States.[1] Their son was Charles Elmer Hampton (1886–1971).
