Biography

Alice Hancock was born in early January 1571 at Action Burnell, Shropshire, England. She was the daughter of John Hancock, b. 1549 in Action Burnell, and his wife, Mary (Osbourne/Osborne) Hancock, b. 1550 in Action Burnell.

Christening: 10 Jan 1571 Action Burnell, Shropshire, England

On January 14, 1593, Alice Hancock married John Hugh Churchman, b. 1559 in Action Burnell. They were probably married by his father, Rev. Richard Churchman, the town's vicar and parish clerk from 1538-1604. The Churchmans soon moved to Brome Hall (aka Broomhall) in Suffolk, England. He may have been a merchant or a cleric like his father. They had a son:

  1. Hugh Churchman, b. 1593 in Suffolk, England.

There is some confusion among family genealogists as to the fate of John Hugh Churchman and his wife Alice. Some say John died in January 1593 but that was their wedding date, not when he died. Others say he died in July 1644 in Lynn, Essex, Massachusetts, New England, but this was the date when his son, "old Hugh Churchman," born in 1593, died at 50 years old. It does seem as if John Hugh's wife Alice must have died in the early 1600s and it's likely that John Hugh Churchman never emigrated to America. I have marked their deaths as "after 1600" in England, until proven otherwise. Their son, Hugh Churchman, definitely did emigrate to Massachusetts in the 1630s. Hugh was the father of Hannah / Annis / Anna Churchman, b. 1616, in Suffolk, England, who married William Witter and helped to settle Connecticut.

Ann was born in 1571. She passed away in 1644.

Hancock-8102 and Hancock-1691 appear to represent the same person because: They were born the same year and married the same man - John Churchman. Thank you for merging them into Hancock-1691 as it was created first, as per WikiTree rules.
