Children Note

Read before adding. Several children including Joseph, Fanny, and Stephen II are those of his siblings or do not belong to this family. Stephen I and brother William both had sons named Stephen. As for Fanny the daughter Frances b 1771 married Braxton Cooper. Her brother John b 1778 married Nancy Cooper, they had a daughter b 1789 named Fanny who married Benjamin Cooper. The woman named Fanny Hancock who married Jeremiah Talbot does not appear to be part of this family. Stephen’s family went to Missouri from Kentucky.

Biography

1776 Project
Private Stephen Hancock I served with Kentucky County Militia, Virginia Militia during the American Revolution.
Daughters of the American Revolution
Stephen Hancock I is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A050909.

Stephen Hancock was born abt 1744 in Goochland Co, VA.
[There is another Stephen born Nov 27, 1749 in Surry County, VA, son of Benj & Jane, but it is probably a different family.[1]]
The Stephen on this page was also the son of a Benjamin and maybe also Jane. He married in 1765 and had his first child in 1767.

Stephen and his brother William were hired out to a carpenter by their older brother. From: Boone-Duden Historical Society Newsletter, Sept/Oct 1995, Issue 95-5 [at Gasconade County Historical Society], Pages28-30
William Hancock 1736-1818 & Stephen Hancock 1744-1827
William and younger brother Stephen were born in Goochland County, Virginia. Robert Hancock states that his father Stephen and Uncle William were "bound" out in the house carpenters trade by their older brother. They were described as both "being 5 feet 8 inches high, weight 160 pounds. They were both nearer alike in every respect than most of other two men, my father (Stephen) a little bow-legged, my uncle straight as an Indian." Both were said to have been "very cheerful and social in character and greatly enjoyed a good joke and were able in telling one."

His father died when Stephen was 16 years old (abt 1760-67).
In a letter written by Robert Hancock to Col. Lyman Draper (the Draper Manuscripts), he states his grandfather "died when his father was 16" years of age. If his grandfather was Benjamin Hancock, then Benjamin died in 1760 as Robert's father, Stephen Hancock, was born 1744 according to informed guesses.

In 1760, the brothers joined the 2nd Virginia Regiment lead by Colonel William Byrd during the French and Indian War. They served in the Cherokee Expedition which left from the Campbell Section of Bedford County and in all likelihood traveled to the Carolinas and possibly Georgia.

Stephen married Catherine "Kitty" Merchant, 1766, Goochland Co, VA. (Kitty was a sister of William Hancock's wife, Mary Merchant)

Stephen's daughter Ruth was christened in Goochland County.

By 1768, he had patented 150 acres of bounty land from his war service in Bedford County. No doubt, William did also.

By1780 had established Hancock's Station 2 miles west of Richmond, on Tates Creek

In 1794 his grandson (son of John) was born in Madison Co, KY.

The Draper Manuscript reports that son Robert said his father (Stephen) died in 1824 at the age of 88. If this was true, then Stephen was born in 1736, and grandfather Benjamin died in 1752.

Another record says he died Sept 1827, Bonhomme township, St. Louis, MO.[2]

Note

Note: William and Stephen are documented brothers. Judith's husband was captured with them at Boone's Lick, and so she is thought to have been a sister to the Stephen and William.[3]
