Note

Note: According to Uncle George, Jack brought his family to Rochester, NY abt 1920.
He and Mom made the journey abt a year later in 1921.
Jack went to Florida to work building 'cabanas' or houses. He liked fishing. In 1927 he was caught in a hurricane, at sea. His body was never found.
----------
[The Spirit of my Grandfather Jack Hancock (1886-1927/8) is nearby]
It was told to me that my grandfather Jack Hancock met his death in a hurricane in Florida. The date given by my Uncle George was 1927 when he was fourteen. Uncle George was fourteen at the time living in Rochester, New York. His father had gone to Florida to build cabanas as the state was in the midst of a real estate boom and jobs were plentiful. Uncle George, born January 10, 1913 would have been fifteen on September 16, 1928- the date of the great hurricane of Florida. Another major hurricane occurred in 1926, when he was thirteen. The body was either never found or identified.
This prompted me to read the book Black Cloud: The Great Florida Hurricane of 1928
by Eliot Kleinberg; Publisher: Carroll & Graf Publishers; 1 Carroll edition (July 2003); ISBN: 0786711469
The clues this book provided began on page 96 which stated "... The 1926 hurricane almost killed the thomases and all but killed the real estate boom along the coast..." On page 130, ".... the boom was starting to lose momentum, and it was now in a rapid downward spiral accelerated by the 1926 hurricane in Miami..."
If I never know which hurricane claimed Grandpa Jack, it won't be without effort. Nearly 700 African Americans were interred (unnamed) in a mass burial in 1928. I choose the 1928 hurricane because one wasn't reported for 1927 and my guess would be that my Uncle would recall some other event that would put him at fourteen rather than thirteen. Unconfirmed and guessing, I know.
One thing I'd like to say is that the 'Brick Wall' can show up well before your research gets to 1870. In 1928, whole African American communities were wiped out by a natural disaster. This 'Brick Wall' was put in place, in part, by the racism of t he times. Efforts were made to identify the white victims and give them p roper burials, but the Blacks were immediately put in pits for burial or pyres for ....
