Biography

Mary was born in 1668. She passed away in 1728.[1]

She arrived with her brother, Timothy, on the ship "Paradise" and of this event Mr. Clement writes thus:[2]

"In 1681 there came from Brayles, a small town in the southern part of Warwickshire, a young man named Timothy Hancock, accompanied by his sister, who was about fifteen years of age. Without friends or means, they lived in a very humble manner among the settlers, but the demand for work soon found Timothy employment, and the demand for wives did not leave Mary long without a suitor."

Mary married William Matlack in 1682 when he was 34 and she was 16. They then removed to a tract of land which he had located between the north and south branches of Pennsauken creek, in Chester township. William acquired these large land tracts in Burlington and Gloucester counties. [3][4]

Mary's brother is also located in an adjoining survey, and in 1684 he married Rachel Firman. Thus it is that the Matlack family of New Jersey—a prolific family indeed—began with William and Mary.

There is a very interesting short book about the history of "The King's Highway"[5] and the very early Quaker cemetery by the Pennsauken Creek on William Matlack's land.

It is written in 1905, by Asa Matlack Stackhouse, the local history meeting was at the site of the burial ground.

In the Warwickshire , England, Baptism, Marriages and Burials 1535-1812 there is listed Mary (Maria) baptism 12 Dec 1669 listing her father as Gulielium

Children

They had nine children[6][7], five of which married a Haines:

  1. John Matlack, 1683 - 1765, married first Hannah Horner, and second Mary Lee, unknown children
  2. George Matlack, 1685 - 1739, married first Mary Foster, and second Mary Burnell, had 11 children total
  3. Mary Matlack, 1688 - 1758, married first Jonathan Haines, son of John Haines, in 1711 and had eight children, and second Daniel Morgan
  4. William Matlack, 1690 - 1730, married Ann Antrim and had eight children (one of which, a 3rd William, married a Mary Turner)
  5. Jane Matlack, 1692 - 1748, married George Irwin, unknown children (Jane married outside of the Quakers and moved to Pennsylvania)
  6. Joseph Matlack,1693 - 1771, married Rebecca Haines, daughter of John Haines
  7. Richard Matlack, 1694 - 1778, married first Rebecca Haines, daughter of Richard Haines and Mary Carlile, and second Mary Wood
  8. Timothy Matlack, 1695 - 1752, married first Mary Haines (another daughter of Richard Haines and Mary Carlile) and had four children, second Martha Burr and had eight children. (Timothy moved to Philadelphia and apparently became a brewer. His son is Colonel Timothy Matlack.)
  9. Sarah Matlack, 1704 - 1774, married Carlile Haines (son of Richard Haines and Mary Carlile and brother to Mary and Rebecca above) .

"Mary Matlock wife of William Matlock Departed this life the 2nd. of ye 11 mo. 1728.9 [OS] aged 62 years."[8]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mary by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mary:

I do believe Mary is attached to the wrong parents. Here is her brother, Timothy Hancock that she traveled to America with, at age 15. She is the daughter of John Hancock. See: Clement, John. Sketches of the First Emigrant Settlers, Newton Township, Old Gloucester County, West New Jersey. Camden, NJ: n.p., 1877. I was referring to Timothy born 1 Dec 1653.

Wm Matlack’s profile has “He married Mary Hancock 1682 in Burlington area, NJ, the daughter of John Hancock. Mary was born 1665 in Brayles, Warwickshire, England.” So a fit. They both settled in the forks of Pennsauken Creek.

Mary’s brother Timothy’s baptism record says he was the son of 'John Hancoke', so Mary's father was John Hancock, rather than William.
I believe that is a different Timothy. He is said to be born 3 Oct 1661 in Newcastle, Northumberland, England. Our Timothy was born 1 Dec 1653 in Warwickshire England.
