Biography

Robert was the son of Simon Hancock and Sarah Gaye. They were the Parents of:

  • Sarah (1643-1689)
  • William (1645-May 1687)
  • Simon (1649-1729)
  • Robert (1650-1709) (this profile)

Robert married Johana "Joan" Ligon about 1673 in Henrico County, Virginia.

Robert Hancock was a juryman in 1679 and 1683, Henrico County. He was a man of comparatively comfortable means in his day, holding 680 acres of land in Quit Rents Rolls of Henrico, 1704. Robert patented 600 acres in Henrico, in 1686 for the transportation of twelve persons to the Colony. Will dated 18 Oct. 1700 and proved 1 Mar. 1709. March 1, 1708/9 Probate granted Johan Hancocke on will of her husband Robert Hancocke. Capt. John Bolling, security.

Robert's Will, written 1708 and returned 1709, named all his children and his wife. It seems he had great faith in his wife, the former Johan Ligon. He made her executor, and left many decisions to her. She survived him by nearly 20 years. When Robert died, he lived at Mount Malady. They had moved from Lower Norfolk County to Henrico County circa 1679. In 1704, Robert paid taxes to Henrico County for 860 acres.
