Biography

GEORGE HANCOCK, son of William Hancock and Elizabeth Cockcroft; born 1685, Lower Norfolk County, Virginia; married BARBARA ______. [Is he the Capt. George Hancock who was justice of Princess Anne County, 1705, 1708, 1714, 1719?]. He lived in Lynnhaven Parish. His grandmother, in her will of 1689, directed that her grandsons (sons of William), including George, should live with their uncle Simon until they came of age.

27 April 1711: on a List of Sheriffs Appointed [on that date]: George Hancock in Princess Anne County. He was also on the lists of appointees for 22 April 1712.[1]

1714: in a document entitled “The Present State of Virginia for the Year 1714 with respect to the County in particular,” George Hancock was named as one of the Justices of the Peace in Princess Anne County [as were Edward and John Moseley—who were also the Coroners]; the parish was Lynnhaven.[2]

In the Name of God Amen I George Hancock of the parish of Linhaven in the County of Princess Ann being very sick & weak in body of Sound & perfect memory praised be to God for the Same & knowing the uncertainty of this life on earth, & that all flesh must yield unto death when it Shall please God to call first I give & recommend my body to the Earth from whence it was taken to be buried in such devout & Christian like manner as the discretion of my Excs. hereafter named & as for my Soule I commit it into the hands of my Creator Trusting through the hopes & merrits of my Blessed Lord & Saviour Jesus Christ to receive full pardon for all my Sins past & As Touching Such worldly Estate as the Lord in his mercy hath bestowed upon me farr above my deserts I give the Same, after all my Just debts & funeral Expenses paid, in manner & form as followeth — Item I give & bequeath unto my Son John Hancock all my Land & plantation whereon I now live unto him & his heirs for Ever to as farr as the road that runs through my Land that Leads to Joseph White & Rhodolphus Malbon & no further. It[em] I Igive & bequeath unto my Son Robert Hancock all my other Land on the other Side of said road unto him and his heirs for Ever — It[em] I give & bequeath unto my Loving wife Barbara Hancock the use of all my Land During her natural Life but that my Said wife Shall not molest or Interrupt of either of my Said Sons from building upon any part of their Land or working of the Same when they shall come of age — It. I give & bequeath unto my two Sons Jno & Robert Hancock to each of them one young cow when they Shall come of age & that I do declare & appoint what I have here given to my two Sons by this my wife to be their full part & share of my Estate — Item I give & bequeath unto my Loving wife & my three daughters Mary, Elizabeth & Barbara Hancock all the rest of my Estate that is not already given by this my will to be Equally divided between them as my Severale Children Shall come of age or day of marriage which Shall first happen and Do likewise make ordain & Constitute & appoint my Loving wife Barbara Hancock my whole & Sole Extx of this my Last will & Testament In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & Seale this thirtieth day of January 1719.

Then the within Last will of Geo: Hancock decd was Exhibited in Court by his Extx who made oath thereto being proved by the oath of Richd Crumpton one of the witnesses thereto is ordered to be Recorded.

Children of George and Barbara (______) HANCOCK, all of whom were under age and unmarried in 1719 when their father composed his will:

  • i. JOHN HANCOCK, b. by 1715; married HANNAH BRUMMALL.
  • ii. ROBERT HANCOCK. He may have been the Robert Hancock who was on the 1756 tithable list taken by Archibald Cary, with slaves Bowser & Cesar, 3 tithes,[3] and on 1762 list of tithables for Chesterfield Co., with one slave Abram, 2 tithes.[4]
  • iii. MARY HANCOCK.
  • iv. ELIZABETH HANCOCK.
  • v. BARBARA HANCOCK.
