Served in the Bedfordshire Yeomanry in WWI, Arthur was responsible for taking the baggage horses up to the front line (he had been a groom in civilian life). When there were air raids, he would lie the horses down next to a church wall to try and keep them calm. He joked that he learned to swim when he had to jump over a wall to escape enemy fire and ended up in a lake!
