Mary Jane Hanigan was an Irish immigrant who lived in the 19th century in America. She was George Cole's second wife, and they married between 1856 and 1859 after the death of George's first wife, Eliza Matthews. Census records show that in 1860, Mary Jane was living with George's new family in the Erie, Pennsylvania area. The 1880 U.S. Census shows that Mary Jane's son Charles Cole was living as a lodger with what might have been Mary Jane's brother, John Hanigan, in Warsaw, New York. Sarah Cole, Mary Jane's daughter, was living with her Aunt Elizabeth (Hanigan) Kingston in Buffalo during the same census.
Mary Jane's son John G. Cole's 1890 marriage registration in Iowa to Katie L. Meyer indicated that his mother's maiden name was Hanigan. At the end of John Hanigan's 1920 obituary, there was a record of his niece, Mrs. William Thomas, being in attendance. She was Susie Thomas, a daughter of George and Mary Jane.
Mary Jane Hanigan and George Cole had eight children together: Eliza Mary (Cole) Buckley, Charles Albert Cole, John G. Cole, James William Cole, Susan E. (Cole) Thomas, Sarah Sadie Sedonia A. Cole, Mary Jane Cole, and Henrietta A. Cole.
Mary Jane died tragically in Buffalo in 1893, after a fall down the stairs. She was rushing to open the door for some visitors and tripped at the top of the stairs, falling headlong to the bottom. She died later that evening. Mary Jane's brother John Hanigan and his daughter Miss Anna attended her funeral.
Hints
Mary Jane Hanigan was George's 2nd wife, although a marriage registration has yet to be found, there are several hints in documents which link her to the Cole and Hanigan families:
They must've married between 1856 (following the death of George's first wife Eliza Matthews in Niagara Falls, Ontario) and 1859 given the 1860 US census, where Margaret Hannigan, Mary Jane's assumed sister, finds her living with George's new family in the Erie PA area.
The 1890 marriage registration between George and Mary Jane's son John G. Cole in Iowa to Katie L. Meyer clearly indicates the maiden name of his mother was Hanigan.
In the 1880 U.S. Census George and Mary Jane's oldest son Charles Cole appears to be living as a lodger with who might possibly be Mary Jane's brother, John Hanigan, in Warsaw N.Y.
In the 1880 U.S. Census George and Mary Jane's daughter Sarah Cole is living with her Uncle and Aunt Elizabeth (Hanigan) Kingston in Buffalo.
Could Mary Jane Hanigan be the sister of John Hanigan prominent citizen of Warsaw, New York? At the very end of his 1920 obituary, there is a record of his niece Mrs. William Thomas being in attendance. She was Susie Thomas, a daughter of George and Mary Jane.
The final hint linking George to an existence in the U.S. comes in a Niagara Falls Ont. cemetery record from 1915 left after Isabella (Cole) Brown died in which the sexton wrote that she was the "daughter of Geo. Cole, marble cutter who went to Buffalo to live and died there."

A Former Warsaw Lady Meets a Sudden Death
Mrs. George Cole of Buffalo, a sister of John Hanigan and former resident of Warsaw, met with a sudden death last week Wednesday evening.
She was hastening down stairs to admit some visitors when she tripped at the top and fell headlong to the bottom. She was picked up unconscious and medical assistance summoned. Their efforts were of no avail, however, for she died about 10 o'clock. The funeral was held on Saturday, Mr. Hanigan and daughter, Miss Anna, attending.
The deceased had visited her relatives in this place in June and her daughter was at her uncle's when the sad accident occurred. Source: Wyoming County Times, Warsaw, August 31, 1893
