After John's death, a suit was brought in Henry County Circuit. The property in question was approximately 450 Court by four of his children against their mother and the remaining heirs to sell the property previously owned by their father. Pages 3 and 4 confirm John's date of death as occurring in January of 1888 and the living heirs as of April 1888. Those heirs named were Jabez A Hankins, George B Hankins, Judith E Shorter, wife of Jas S Shorter, A C Hankins (Albert), M F Hankins (Millard), James M Hankins only child of Joseph R Hankins (deceased), Helen E Grant widow of Mr Grant, and Louisa M Hankins daughter of John H Hankins Jr (deaceased). The property in question was approximately 450 acres lying on Sandy River in Pittsylvania County, with a few acres crossing over into Henry County. The land was sold and the proceeds divided up.[6]
