Biography

  • A report in the Lithgow Mercury dated October 14, 1941 (Page6) reads:
  • A MARRANGAROO WEDDING
  • One of the most charming weddings celebrated in the historic and picturesque church of St. John's, Wallerawang, in many years took place on

Saturday afternoon. The principals were Sarah, second daugnter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Hankins, of "Marrangaroo House," Marrangaroo, and Stanley George, third son of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Hartigan, of Manly.

  • The ceremony was performed by the rector, Rev. Thomas Hughes, and was witnessed by a large number of relatives and well-wishers of the happy couple — the bride having resided in the neighborhood all her life.
  • The church was beautifully decorated, under the supervision of Mrs. J. O.

Andrews, of Sydney, who featured a number of arches of evergreens and white roses over the main aisle, with a bridal bell suspended in the sanctuary.

  • As the bride entered the church on the arm of her father, the choir and

congregation sang "The Voice that Breathed O'er Eden." During the signing of the register Mr. J. O. Andrews, of Sydney, sang "Because." Mrs. Clare, an old friend, presided at the organ.

  • The bride, who wore a smart gown of white satin (made on classical lines), a train and circular veil, coronet of orange blossoms, and carried a bouquet of tulips, and orchids, looked particularly charming; There were four bridesmaids — Misses Nell and Ann Hankins (sisters), in ankle-length gowns of blue georgette, and Misses Marjorie Connor (a life-long friend of the bride), and Clarice Hartigan (sister of the bridegroom), in similar gown of pink georgette. They also carried presentation bouquets. *Mr. Len. Hartigan (brother) was best man. Messrs. Carl and Harold Hartigan (brothers), and I. Bunt were groomsmen.
  • At the conclusion of the ceremony the bridal party and friends motored

to the residence of the bride's parents, where the happy couple received the felicitations of their friends. Mrs. Hankins received her guests in black georgette, while Mrs. Hartigan, who participated in the welcome, was in navy blue georgette. The bridegroom's present to each was a bouquet, while the bridesmaids each received a handbag. The wedding repast to which 100 sat down, was set out on the spacious verandah, Rev. T. Hughes presiding.

  • The toast list opened with that of the King, by the chairman, who next

proposed, in highly complimentary terms,.. , "Health".. to the Bride and Bridegroom. This was acknowledged by the bridegroom. The best man proposed "The Bridesmaids," to which Mr. C. Hartigan responded. Mr. R. Northey proposed "The Bride's Parents," who were favorably known to him during 40 years. Mr. A. Leeson, an old friend of the family, supported.

  • Mr. Lindquist (a nephew) proposed , "The, Bridegroom's Parents," of . whom too much could not be said in praise, as they were sterling citizens. *Both Mr. Hankins' and Mr. Hartigan responded. Mr. Bunt proposed "The Chairman," to which Mr. Hughes humorously responded.
  • Later, Mr. and Mrs. Hartigan left on their motor honeymoon tour, the bride travelling in a navy and white crepe-de-chene ensemble. They will reside at "Marrangaroo" Station (newly named in honor of the bride's home). "Loombarah". near Tamworth. The young couple were the recipients of numerous beautiful and useful presents."
  • Her Death Notice reads:
  • "HARTIGAN, Henrietta (Ett) - May 9, 1975 at Tamworth, late of 45 David Street, Tamworth and formerly of Loomberah, beloved wife of Stan (deceased) and loving mother and mother-in-law of Ted and Phyllis, Barbara and Doug Jackson, Alan and Barbara, Gwen and Rodney Wratten and dear grandmother of their families , aged 70 years. In God's care". She was buried at Evergreen Lawn Cemetery, Tamworth.
  • She had been a Member of Tamworth City Women's Bowling Club.
