Biography

Sarah was born in 1786. She died in 1876. [1]

Sarah was the daughter of Abraham Hanks Jr and his first wife Sarah Harper, his second wife was Mary Combs.Abraham Hanks Sr died in 1784 in Prince William Co VA, he was married to Jemima Million, so it is impossible for Sarah Hanks Varvel to be the daughter of Abraham Hanks Sr.

The children of Sarah Hanks were illegitimate, the father of her children is unknown, she was not married to a James Hanks, just another made up story.

Marriages
  1. Andrew Varvel m. about 1813, though they never had any children of their own.

After Andrews death in Sarah Varvel's claim for a widows pension, she swears that she and Andrew were married before the war of 1812 and that neither she nor Andrew had provided aid with the rebellion against the United States. Attached to her application is a sworn statement of William Hanks (probably her brother?) that states that he knew Andrew and Sarah and was a close personal neighbor of theirs since before the War of 1812, that they were married before Dec 14, 1814 (evidently this date was a cut-off for eligibility of widows benefits), that they left Kentucky and moved to Edgar County Illinois in 1829, and that Andrew died around April, 1864. Furthermore, William stated that at one point during the war of 1812 Andrew had returned home sick with a horse and that he returned the horse to the Post before the war's end. Also included was a statement by Permelia Hanks Landsaw, daughter of Sarah.

In 1829 Andrew and Sarah moved to Edgar County, IL - where Andrew died in April, 1864. Sarah lived another 12 years.
