Vancouver Hanks (known as "Van") was born January 7, 1814 in Powell County, Kentucky to Jonathan Hanks and Barbara (Yoakum).[1][citation needed] His name may have been given him by his father in honor of Charles Vancouver, an Englishman with whom he had become friends during his travels with Daniel Boone.[2]
Van Hanks died April 20, 1879 in Bowen County, Kentucky.[1][citation needed]
