Returning from the war in France Dick helped out on the farm along with his brother George delivering milk in the Cleghorn section of Fitchburg. Here he met Ida "(sweet as apple cider)" he would he would often sing. A skilled carpenter (sergeant in a CB cited for effort building infrastructure in France in WW1) he did all he could to stay out of a life in the mills, they bought a small lunch counter added a second floor function hall and catered to the franco-american neighbors working long days and nights Ida handled the kitchen and Dick manned the bar. On weekends there was music with the playboys. Purple heart recipient wounded in France 1918. Member American Legion, and White Eagles. As an aside, Henry Hanks worked on the construction of the Wachusett Reservoir and aqueducts as an engineer, after completion he bought the Wyman farm in Westminster Massachusetts, producing dairy products which were sold in nearby Cleghorn a bustling industrial section of Fitchburg. While delivering milk to Maguays Market there Dick met Ida who was a clerk at the store. Ida had come to Fitchburg from Boylston after her family was displaced by the construction of the Wachusett Reservoir.
