He was 41 when he married Alexandrine Clement in 1844; she was 19.[2]
In 1850 they were living in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana with three children.[3][4]
Whoever informed the census-taker was likely neither of them. Both of their ages are wrong by about 10 years, and Jean is said to have been a cobbler "from Germany." In addition, the transcriber of the census marked the two youngest children as living in their own household, next door to their parents. So one wonders if their oldest son was really named John Jr. and the next oldest was Jean Baptiste. The next door neighbor was Jean's brother-in-law, Eugene Clement. Perhaps he or his wife was the census informant for the Hanks family.
Jean Hanks died c.1859; his widow remarried in 1860.[9]
He is said to have been buried in 1859 at Estherwood Cemetery in Crowley, but the grave location is unknown.[10]
