Biography

Joseph Hanks,' second in his line, son of Joseph Hanks and Ann "Nannie" Lee, was born 1784-1785[1] possibly in Hampshire County, Virginia, after his family started their westward migration, but before they got to their final destination in Kentucky.[2] In his early years, he was known as Joseph Hanks, Jr.

After the death of his father in 1793 he may have gone back to Virginia with his mother. After her death a few years later, he returned to Kentucky and became a carpenter, operating a shop in Elizabethtown. [citation needed]

He married Mary Young on November 10, 1810, in Elizabethtown, Kentucky.[3]

Children:
  1. Jacob Vertrees Hanks, b-1812
  2. Elizabeth Hanks, b-September 26, 1813
  3. Susannah Hanks, b-January 5, 1816
  4. Nancy Hanks, b-June 2, 1818
  5. John Henry Hanks, b-November 22, 1822
  6. Joseph Hanks, b-May 14, 1825
  7. Mary Ann Hanks, b-September 23, 1827
  8. Amaltha Hanks, b-August 22, 1830
  9. Isabel Hanks, b-March 9, 1833
  10. Caroline Hanks, b-1836

He moved to Adams County, Illinois and enlisted in the Blackhawk War. [4]

By the time his son Joseph came of age, the proband was known as Joseph Hanks, Sr.

Joseph executed his last Will on 25 March 1856, witnessed by Adam Miller and Wm. Hoosier, nominating his wife Mary Hanks as Executor and making bequests to her and to his children, without naming any of them except for Joseph, whom he mentioned in regard to a debt.[5]

Joseph died "on or about the Fourth day of April A.D. 1856, as it is said," as per the administrator's bond for his estate. Mary may have renounced executorship, because Jacob V. Hanks was recorded as the administrator.[6]

Joseph's grave is at the Melrose Chapel Cemetery in Quincy. Please disregard the genealogical assertion in the Find-A-Grave profile which, in error, asserts a relationship to Nancy Shipley. Also, note that, though the pictured stone is very difficult to read, it appears to contradict the probate records. Since we know that the probate records were made contemporaneously, we defer to them for the date of death.[7]

Hanks-227 and Hanks-193 appear to represent the same person because: It appears Joseph Hanks-227 should be merged with some other Joseph Hanks in order to get rid of it, because it's only citing an ancestry search which does not reveal any particular document-able person. It was probably begun as an attempt to document either Joseph Hanks, grandfather of Nancy (Hanks) Lincoln (Hanks-230), or that man's son of the same name (Hanks-193).

In either case, it seems to me we should initiate a merge with one of these two profiles. So as to avoid too much noise in the more popular of these profiles, I will propose we merge this one with the son, Hanks-193.

Obviously, the vitals are wildly different. The intention here is not to reconcile them, but just to get rid of this profile. When merging, we should maintain everything that has been in the Hanks-193 profile and discard everything in Hanks-227.

This merge has been attempted before and was rejected. I hope we can make it happen this time.

Hanks-227 and Hanks-193 do not represent the same person because: father and son?

Hanks-227 and Hanks-193 do not represent the same person because: I am here answering a prompt which asks me to explain why Hanks-227 and Hanks-193 do not represent the same person. The prompt is inappropriate because what I am doing is removing a match rejection.

Hi Daphne,

Will you please take a look at the merge proposed by Justin? I'm very much inclined to disconnect his orphaned, sourceless Joseph from his parents, as you already did once. Without the parents there is nothing there to suggest the merge is warranted. I think Justin's best course is to look for another Joseph Hanks born in Bedford, Virginia around 1860. Having this extra Joseph in its current state attached to the family is just wrong.

This Joseph Hanks is connected to the wrong parents (or else is a duplicate with wrong dates and locations). Their son Joseph was born c.1785 in Amelia Virginia. Their son Thomas had a son named Joseph, born 1764 in Richmond. That Joseph's mother was said to be Elizabeth Lee. Maybe that's who you have.

Initiated a merge with the Joseph profile with correct dates and places.

Thanks, Stephanie!

I've added a couple probate citations which turn out to support the 4 April 1856 death date, along with a note concerning the Find-A-Grave profile.

Daphne, please read the note on the edit page regarding the conflicting dates of death here -- bio vs. data field -- and reasons not to cite the F/G memorial. I think there may be better sources for his death information, but even nothing may be better than that F/G mess. The photo contradicts the memorial (which also has the wrong mother for him!) and the memorial and their own citation differ, which no doubt is the reason we have two dates. Please take a look and decide which date, and whether to remove the F/G source. Thanks!

Hanks-1136 and Hanks-193 appear to represent the same person because: these are duplicates

We have no evidence of this person's existence. We have no evidence that Lucy Shipley (http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Shipley-82) ever had children with the surname Hanks.
