Biography

Named for her paternal grandmother, Helen was born in 1819 to Richard Hansen and Mary Catherine Nealy.

She married John M. Becker, the son of Peter Becker and Elizabeth Mereness about 1840 in Sharon Springs, Schoharie, New York. He was a wagonmaker and later became an undertaker.

Their eldest son, Vinton, was born Feb. 9, 1842. He enlisted Oct. 25, 1861 as a Corporal in the 3rd Heavy Artillery, New York in the Civil War, but later died at the Regimental Hospital on Apr. 29, 1862 of "febris congestion." He was only 20 years old.

Son Newell, was born Feb. 9, 1848. He married Ellen (Ella) D. Marshall on Oct. 25, 1869. He is mentioned in his grandfather, Richard Hansen's will in 1871. They had one child, Eva, b. Dec. 1876, who never married and died shortly after her mother died in 1938. Newell and his family lived in Sharon where he died in 1934.

1850 Census for Sharon, Schoharie, New York John M. Becker, 30 Helen, 31 Vinton, 6 Newell, 2

1855 State Census for Sharon, Schoharie, New York; John M. Becker, 35 Helen, 36 Vinton, 11 Newell, 7

Son Judson, was born abt. 1855. The last record I found for him was as a minor in 1871 when he petitioned the court to have his father, John M. Becker named as his legal guardian. He was mentioned in his grandfather, Richard Hansen's Will in 1871, so it may have had something to do with that.

1860 Census for Mayfield, Fulton, New York; John M. Becker, 40 Helen, 41 Vinton, 16 Newell, 12 Judson, 5

Vinton, Newell and Judson were all names of missionaries, popular at the time, who were sent by the Baptist General Convention to Burma.

Helen died sometime between the censuses of 1860, where her name last appears and 1870 when her husband has already remarried.
