Biography

Hans Hansen was born in Gudme, Fyn, Denmark 11 Oct 1867, son of {Bricklayer} Lars Hansen and Ane Marie Pedersen. He was baptized at the Gudme Lutheran Church on 8 Dec 1867.

His Godparents were {Sewing girl} Getrud Hansen (He later named my grandmother Getrud, so she was also a Getrud Hansen), Ane Listh Hansen and {Unmarried} Hans Rasmussen, {Bricklayer} Jens Nilsen and {Houseman} Hans Jorgensen from Albjerg.

Hans was confirmed at 13 years of age in Gudme on 4 Oct 1881, which was the first Sunday of Michalemas. He was said to have “excellent good knowledge of he Bible and catechism studied in confirmation preparation. He has very good behavior.”

Hans was a gardener who served in: Albjerb, Jutland, Denmark 1 May 1882-1Nov 1882 Ellerup, Jutland, Denmark 1 Nov 1882-1 Nov 1883 Broholms Garden as a student from 1 Nov 1883-1 May 1885. He was there to “become an educated gardener and has in that period participated in all garden restoration work to my full satisfaction and has always been nice and willing to do his chores. That is why I can recommend him on the highest to everyone who may need his services” Signed J. Sorensen, Gardener. He was also hired at Broholms Garden on 7 Nov 1883 for pay of 30 kroner per half year. Thisted, Jutland, Denmark as a student in the greenhouse from 16 Apr 1886-1 Oct 1887 where C. Carstens wrote, “He has the same time proved himself a true workingman and has with joy done flower arrangement.” Thisted, Jutland, Denmark as a student from 1 Oct 1886-20 Mar 1887, where C.P. Jespersen, Business Gardener wrote, “I can be witness that he has been hard-working, thoughtful and reliable. He has behaved well and has shown to have extreme interest for his work and I can, therefore, with good conscience, recommend him as well as I hereby give him my best wishes for the future.” Hesselagergaard, Hesselager, Fyn, Denmark where he was the master gardener from 4 Mar 1888. From A guide to the Castles and Manor House of Funen” by Anders Myrtue (1997) “Hesselagergaard is the 'gentrified castle' or manor house of the village of Hesselager on the island of Fyn, Denmark...on nearly all manor house maps from the 1800s can be seen the layout of well-cared for parks with geometric flower beds, paths and lawns.” (I had the pleasure of visiting Hesselagergaard in 1997 where I spent the afternoon with Baron Henrik T. Blixen-Finecke's aunt Elisabeth Moller. She enjoyed seeing Hans Hansen's log books and I enjoyed seeing his house and the gardens. CSW)

Hans served in the military in Nyborg, Fyn, Denmark 12 Apr 1887.

Hans married Emilie Gustava Nilsdatter in Hesselager, Fyn, Denmark on 2 Nov 1888. He was 20 and she was 25. She was the daughter of Rasmus Rasmussen of Gudme. They were join in matrimony by Chr. Henrik de Thurah, the clergy of Hesslager Church. (I had the privilege of attending Sunday service there in 1997. CSW)

He followed his son Lars Peter Hansen and daughter Gertrud Emilie Kirsten Hansen to Washington State USA on 18 Feb 1930, where raised peonies for sale on the farm of Minton Jefferson Wilson and his wife Christine Wilson nee Gertrud Hansen.

Hans died 29 Mar 1930 in Washington State, USA.
