Biography

John Hanson's will was dated 12 December 1713 in Charles County, Maryland. He describes himself as a Planter, and names sons Robert, Benjamin, John, Samuel, and daughters Mary Maconchie (wife of William), Ann Hanson, Sarah Hanson, and grandson Samuel.[1] The will was proved on 5 July 1714[1] and thus it is presumed that he died shortly before that date.

Research Notes

Genealogist George Russell, a Fellow of the American Society of Genealogists and a Fellow of the National Genealogical Society, wrote a groundbreaking article that dismantled the myth of John Hanson (c1630-1714) having origins in Sweden. The article states that the myth was created by author George A. Hanson in his 1876 book “Old Kent: The Eastern Shore of Maryland”. Most researchers studying John Hanson are familiar with the story, which is well described in the article.[2]

Mr. Russell clarifies that John Hanson was actually an indentured servant whose servitude can be documented, and that John Hanson cannot be found in any territory of New Sweden or associated with any Swedes including his alleged brother from the myth Andreas/Andrew Hanson.[2]

Mr. Russell also dissolves the claim that John Hanson was married to Mary Hussey.[2]
