As a young man during the depression, Harold travelled around the countryside visiting relatives in Iowa by way of a railroad boxcar. On his return to Montana, Harold went to work on the Fort Peck Dam. During World War II, he worked in the shipyards in Portland, Oregon. While there, he met his future bride, Goldie May Crumley. After their marriage in 1943, Harold and Goldie inherited an 800-acre farm south of Flaxville, Montana, and moved there in 1948 to raise pigs and wheat. Harold collected western lore and was a student of Custer and the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
