Captain Francis Hardgraves served with Wilkes County Regiment, North Carolina Militia during the American Revolution.
Francis Hardgraves lived in Appalachia.

Francis was born on 5 Mar 1745 in Augusta County, Virginia.[1]

Francis served in the North Carolina militia during the American Revolution. He was a captain in the Surry County Regiment of Militia from 1776-1777[2], a captain in in the Wilkes County Regiment of Militia from 1777-1780[3], and a major in the Wilkes County Regiment of Militia from 1780-1781.[4]. He participated in the Cherokee Expedition 1776[5] and the Battle of Hanging Rock.[6]

Francis died on 7 Aug 1828 in Davidson County, Tennessee.[7] He was buried in Hardgrave Cemetery in Williamson County, Tennessee.[8]

Slaves

Francis' 1820 U.S. census enumeration showed that he owned 21 slaves: 6 males under 14, 2 males 14 through 25, 2 males 26 through 44, 1 male 45 and over, 6 females under 14, 3 females 14 through 25, and 1 female 26 through 44.[9]

In his will, dated 22 February 1827, Francis bequeathed a boy named John to his grandson Francis Hardgrave, son of John and Polly Hardgrave.[10]
