Note

Note:
It is my opinion that Martin and Madeleine were probably not the parents of Mark Hardin.
Martin and Madeleine were French Huguenots. The Hardin family tradition has always been that they had Huguenot ancestors in France. It is assumed but not proved that their son Mark Hardin born in Staten Island in 1681 is Mark Hardin in Virginia as the dates closely coincide. Many researchers do not agree.
Note:
Riker's "History of Harlem" states Martin was born in 1645 in Fordham NY.
First records for Martin Hardin listed are banns of marriage to Madeline du Sauchoy, with Hardin spelled Hardewyn. Later records list him as Martin Harden, and then Hardin. Both he and Madeline's family are listed as living in Fordham New York.
The Hardin family is believed to have come from France, possibly Rouen, and fled France to England during the St. Bartholomew's massacre August 24, 1572, or possibly in the next century during the persecution of the Huguenots. Others say that the family had been in Virginia for several generations.
It is believed they are of Huguenot (French Protestant) lineage, as is believed of the du Sauchoys. Hardewyn is the Dutch phoneticization of Hardouin. The Honorable Martin D. Hardin (1780-1823), great-great-grandson of this Martin, once told General William Preston "that anciently the name was Hardouin". (Reported in the book "Life of Ben Hardin", by F. P. Little.
Extensive historical information on the Du Sauchoy and Martin Hardin families is contained in "Hardin and Harding of Virginia and Kentucky", compiled by Dorothy Ford Wulfeck in 1963, p. 47-49. Sources listed are "First Settlers of Piscataway and Woodbridge, NJ", Nonnette, "History of Harlem" by James Riker, 1904, New York Genealogical Society Magazine, and Yearbook of the Holland Society.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Martin by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Martin:
