Biography

Jasper Windle Hardin was the son of Harvey and Eliza Jane (Louisa) Rutherford Williamson Hardin. He was born in October 1861 in Lawrence County, in the southeastern area of Kentucky. His siblings were John, Rebecca, Sarah, William, Harvey, Mary B., Priscilla, Benjamin, and Thomas J. In the 1870 census he is 9, and living with his parents and siblings ^[1]. He still living at home in the 1880 census; he is 18 years old ^[2]. At the age of 24 he married Mary Elizabeth James on November 26, 1885 in Martin County ^[3]. Their children were Joseph N., Laura B., Maude J., Thomas who died in 1900 at the age of three, Frank, Theodore. In the 1900 census he is with his wife and children, and is the local sheriff. He owns his own house, and can read and write ^[4]. In 1910 he was living with his wife and children on a farm he owns, though there is a mortgage. He farmed for a living ^[5]. In 1920 he farmed full time. The family farm is now free of mortgage ^[6]. In 1930 he was still farming.the property is worth about $4,000. There was no radio which generally meant there was no electricity yet^[7]. In the 1940 census Jasper and Elizabeth are still on the family farm, but all the children have left the homestead.
