Biography

Benjamin Valentine Harding was born in Paris, France. [1]Benjamin, son of Benjamin Harding & Jane, was baptised on 16 May 1847 in Brighton, Sussex, England.[2]

He enlisted in the Royal Marines and was discharged as an Invalid at Portsmouth, England in 1861, when aged 18 years. [3]

In the 1861 census Benjamin (age 18) was the nephew of Thomas Dickinson in Boldre, Hampshire, England.[4]

Benjamin (age 23), child of Benjamin Harding, married Sarah Elizabeth Proudfoot on 15 April 1865 in Brighton St Nicholas, Sussex, England.[5]

In the 1871 census Benjamin (age 28) was the head of household in Brighton, Sussex, England.[6]

Benjamin was employed on 31 Dec1871.[7]

In February 1887 Benjamin was appointed Fore Inspector in Napier[8]

In 1876-77, Benjamin, was registered to vote in Napier, New Zealand.[9]

Benjmain was a freemason joined in 1886.[10]

In Lloyd's Weekly enquiry is made for Benjamin Valentine Harding of Brighton (England) who left London for New Zealand in October, 1873; last heard of at the railway works, Napier. Frederick Payne asks.[12]

Benjamin Valentine Harding died on 17 August 1898 and was buried in Mangatainoka Pahiatua cemetery in Tararaua District N.Z, aged 56. Recorded as an Anglican, he died on the 17th August 1898 and was buried on the 20th August 1898 in an unmarked grave - block: 3 row: Alpha - plot: 5 grave: 31 [13][14]
