Note

Bertie was underage at the time of her marriage to Darrel. Her father J. A. Hardwick had to accompany her to the courthouse and sign a letter of consent to allow the marriage. On Bertie's marriage license and application, she and her father's last name are given as Hardrick. Even her 1936 Social security application shows Hardrick, even though she always told everyone her side of
the family spelled it Hardwick. Bertie and J.D. Reynolds raised her 4 younger brothers and sister: James, Ruth, Clifford and Luther.
Bertie's location of birth is incorrect on her death certificate. According to her sister, Ruth Simmons, the family lived in Laurens county on John C. Bracewell's farm until approximately 1916 and then moved to Milan in Telfair county. However, Bertie's parents were married in Montgomery County and that is where the family can be found in the 1910 census. They moved to Milan, in Telfair County by 1916. Milan is where the family is found from 1920 to 1925.
After the death of Bertie's first husband in 1937, she met Harley and they were probably married about 1939 in Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia since he was in the military and stationed at the base near Columbus. This marriage did not last, and around 1950 they separated, but did not get a divorce until around 1953. She had a great sense of humor and she loved to travel and dance. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star of Cordele. She died as a result of a cerebral hemorrhage due to injuries received in a car accident in March of the same year.
