Mary Ellen Hardy and her twin sister Phoebe Jane Hardy, daughters of John Hardy and Ruth Bagnell, were born 19 September 1829 in Gabarus, Cape Breton. They were baptized in St. George's Church in Sydney, 20 September 1831.[1]
Mary Ellen married James Nicoll about 1850 and they settled in Framboise where James worked as a fisherman and they raised 9 children.[2] By the time of the 1881 Census, the family was living in Gabarus [3] and they remained there through 1891[4] and 1901.[5] James passed away in 1907 and in 1911, Mary was living with her daughter Harriet in Gabarus. [6]
Mary Ellen passed away in Sydney 7 February 1920 at the age of 90. She was buried in Gabarus on February 9th. [7]
