Biography

Bannister Hardy was born in Virginia, likely Pittsylvania about 1785. He would marry Alsey Yates on May 9, 1808.

Wife Alsey passed away likely 1832, as Bannister married Eva Pigg on January 20, 1834.

Bannister Hardy would be shown as head of house in Pittsylvania County censuses of 1820-1840.

By the time of the 1850 census, most or all of the children from Bannister's first marriage had gone off on their own. The eldest child shown, Louisa, is questionable as to who the mother is. The full list of children noted from 1850 and 1860 censuses:

  1. Louisa 1834
  2. Nancy 1837
  3. Obediah 1838
  4. Joshua 1841
  5. Tabitha 1842
  6. Henry 1845
  7. Presley 1846
  8. William 1849
  9. Virginia 1855

At least 3 of Bannister Hardy's sons would fight in the Civil War. Two sons of Bannister and Eva Hardy would enlist in the CSA, Obediah in 1861, and Presley in 1862. Both would serve in the 38th Virginia Infantry, Company H. From Bannister's previous marriage to Alsey Yates, son Joseph S. Hardy enlisted in 1861, and was also in the 38th Infantry, Company H.

The FamilySearch profile for Bannister Hardy shows his parents as Thomas Hardy and Jemima Dodson, but no source shown. The profile also shows Bannister's death in 1865, but again, no source.

Hardy-3405 and Hardy-4553 appear to represent the same person because: Exhibit A: "Bannister Hardy was born in Virginia, likely Pittsylvania about 1785. He would marry Alsey Yates on May 9, 1808."

Hardy-4553

Exhibit B: "Banister Hardy" "Husband of Eva Alsey Yates — married 9 May 1808 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia." Hardy-3405

These two people had the same name, and married the same lady, on the same date. It is logical to assume, therefore, that they might be the same individual.
