Biography

John was born in 1889 at Barton upon Humber, Lincolnshire, the son of William James Hare and Betsy Ann Hare formerly Linley. [1]

He was baptised on 10 February 1889 at St. Peter's Church, Barton on Humber. The family was simply recorded as living in Barton on Humber and father William was a tile maker. John's date of birth was recorded in the baptismal register as 11 January 1889. [2]

In the 1891 census John was living with his parents at Mr Alcocks Brickyard, Barton on Humber. He was aged 2 years. [3]

His mother Betsy Ann Hare died in 1896 when John was aged 7 years. [4]

His father remarried two years later.

In the 1901 census John was living with his father and stepmother at Burgate, Barton on Humber. Father William J, aged 36, was a chemical works labourer. Stepmother Elizabeth was aged 40. John was aged 12 years and younger brother William J was aged 7. [5]

In 1911 the family was living at 53 Marsh Lane, Barton on Humber. Father William James, aged 46, was still a chemical works labourer. Stepmother Elizabeth was aged 49. John, aged 22, was also a labourer at the chemical works. Brother William James, aged 17, was a cycle works labourer. [6]

John Hare married Ruth E Hall in 1919. [7]

In the 1921 census John and Ruth were visitors at the home of James and Savannah Barley and children at 186 Waterloo St, Hull, Yorkshire. The Barley family were James, aged 45, a house painter and decorator working on his own account, Savannah aged 32, and children James Carey, aged 21, a house decorator and painter working with his father, Arnold Noel aged 7, Charles Warneford aged 5 and Edith Nellie aged 3. John Hare, aged 31, was an out of work malster, last employed by Gilstrap & Earp, Barton on Humber. Ruth Ellen Hare was aged 27. [8]
Savannah was Ruth's sister.

The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.
At that time John and Ruth were residing at 55 Newport St, Barton on Humber. John, born 11 January 1889, was aged 50. He was a malster. Ruth E, born 12 January 1894, was aged 45. [9]

Ruth E Hare died in 1966 aged 72 years. [10]

From the Grimsby Evening Telegraph dated 29 October 1966, Pg 2 -
DEATHS
HARE. – On October 28, 1966, at 17, Newport-street, Barton-on-Humber, Ruth Ellen, aged 72 years, a dearly loved wife of John. Service at Trinity Chapel, Barton-on-Humber, on Monday, October 31, at 2 p.m. No flowers please, in lieu donations may be sent to Miss Surniss, at 100, Butts-road, for Cancer Research. [11]

John Hare died in 1967 aged 78 years. [12]

From the Grimsby Evening Telegraph dated 7 August 1967, Pg 2 –
DEATHS
HARE. – On August 5, 1967, John, aged 78 years, beloved husband of the late Ruth Ellen. Cortege will leave 17, Newport-street, Barton-on-Humber, for service at Trinity Methodist Church on Wednesday, August 9, at 2 p.m. Resting in Huteson’s Chapel of Rest, 25, Holydyke, where flowers will be received. Friends please accept this (the only) intimation. And from the same newspaper dated 12 August 1967, Pg 2 -

HARE. – Mr. Hall and Family wish to thank all relatives and friends for floral tributes received. Grateful thanks to family doctor, doctors and staff of Scunthorpe War Memorial Hospital, Brigg Hospital and Sealey House, Skegness, also meals-on-wheels and home help services. Special thanks to Jenny, Mrs. Horner, Lily and all neighbours for their many kindnesses and to Mr. Hutson [sic] and staff for their invaluable help and efficient funeral arrangements. [13]
