Arthur was born in 1898 at York, Yorkshire, the son of Arthur Henry Hare and Emily Martha Hare formerly Skipworth. [1]
In the 1901 census Arthur was living with his parents at 66 Fanur St, York. He was aged 3 years. [2]
In 1911 the family was living at the Fire Station Married Quarters, Low Friargate, York. Arthur, aged 13, was attending school. [3]
In the 1921 census the family was living at 20 Heslington Rd, York. Father Arthur H, aged 62, was a retired police inspector. Mother Emily M was aged 63. Sister Gertrude, aged 28, was a school teacher at Shipton Street School, York. She was employed by the City of York Education Committee. Arthur, aged 23, was a school teacher student. [4]

Arthur had attended Archbishop Holgate’s Grammar School and was awarded a Kings Scholarship and University Grant.
Arthur Hare, born 31 January 1898, was accepted as a student at Leeds University on 2 February 1916, and was due to start his course in October 1916. However as Arthur entered into military service [WWI] he did not take up his course until 1919, after demobilisation. On 16 January 1919 he became a full time student in the Education Department. In June 1921 Arthur was awarded the degree of Bachelor of Science and a Teacher’s Certificate, in 1922 he was awarded the degree of Bachelor of Science with Class I Honours in Physics and in 1924 the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Physics). Arthur Hare married Mary Ellen Robinson on 16 April 1925 at St Clement Bishophill Senior, York. Their marriage certificate recorded Arthur was a bachelor aged 27 and a teacher. His father was named as Arthur Henry Hare (deceased), an Ex-Inspector, York City Police. Mary was a spinster aged 28 and a teacher. Her father was named as Joseph Henry Robinson, a druggist's assistant. At the time of their marriage Arthur was living at 2 Maldon Rd, Acton, W.3 and Mary at 23 Charlton St, York. Their witnesses were Alfred Hare, Arthur's brother, and Joseph Henry Robinson, Mary's father. [6]
Banns has been read on 8, 15 and 22 March 1925 at St. Mary’s Church, Acton, London. The register recorded Arthur was a bachelor of that parish and Mary Ellen Robinson was a spinster of St. Clement, York. [7]
This couple had two children named Arthur Skipworth Hare born 1926 at York and Margaret Hare born 1931 at Birmingham, Warwickshire.

DR. ARTHUR HARE’S NEW POST
Darlington Headmaster
Dr. Arthur Hare, senior physics master at King Edward VI. High School, Birmingham, has been appointed, subject to approval, headmaster of Darlington Grammar School.
Dr. Hare, who graduated at Leeds University, was on active service during the Great War, and was at a school in London before coming to Birmingham in January, 1929.

A TALL HEAD MASTER
Dr Arthur Hare, M.Sc., senior physics master at the King Edward VI. High School, Birmingham, has been appointed by Darlington Education Committee to be head master of Darlington Grammar School in succession to Mr L. W. Taylor. The appointment is subject to confirmation by Darlington Town Council.
Dr Hare, who is aged 35 and is 6ft. 3in. in height, will take up his appointment in January.
A native of York, Dr. Hare was educated at Archbishop Holgate’s Grammar School, there. He enlisted during the war at the age of 18 as a trooper in the Royal Scots Greys and later got a commission in the Royal Garrison Artillery. [8]
Wife Mary Ellen Hare died in 1939 aged 42 years. [9]

DARLINGTON HEAD’S WIFE DEAD
Mrs. M. Hare, wife of Dr. Arthur Hare, headmaster of Darlington Grammar School, died at her home, Westbourne Grove, Abbey Road, Darlington, yesterday. She had been ill for some time.
A native of York, where her father, Mr. H. Robinson, still lives, Mrs. Hare was educated at York and at Ripon Training College. She was a teacher at York before her marriage about 15 years ago.
Mr. Hare was appointed headmaster of Darlington Grammar School in 1934, and both he and Mrs. Hare have been associated with Bondgate and Elm Ridge Methodist Churches.
There is a son, aged 12, who is attending the Grammar School and a daughter, aged eight, who is at the Darlington High School for Girls.

DARLINGTON CHANGE
Owing to the pressure of other important duties, Superintendent H. Huitson has been obliged to relinquish his appointment as officer in control of Darlington’s A. R. P. [Air Raid Precautions] Report Centre.
The position has been taken over by Dr. A. Hare, principal of Darlington Grammar School. [10]
The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.
At that time Arthur was residing at 25 Westbourne Grove, Darlington, Durham. Born 31 January 1898, he was aged 41. Arthur was a schoolmaster. Son Arthur, born 20 July 1926, was aged 13 and daughter Margaret, born 5 March 1931, was aged 8. Her surname was later amended to Jones, her married surname. Also living with them was housekeeper Edith Leng, born 16 June 1903, and domestic servant Nora Slater, born 7 February 1922. The latter's surname was later amended to Alderson, her married surname. DURHAM HONOURS 11 WITH DEGREES
DISTINGUISHED figures in education, journalism, medicine, civic and local government spheres are among 11 people to be honoured by Durham University in July. They are to receive honorary degrees at congregations in Durham and Newcastle. …
The following honorary degrees will be conferred at the Durham ceremony on July 7. [Included] Doctor of Civil Law: Dr. Arthur Hare, former headmaster of Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Darlington, and member of the School Examination Board, in the University from 1934 to 1960.

One man show
Leisure painting by Dr. Arthur Hare, former Darlington Grammar School headmaster, is on view in the Post House Restaurant there. He has been a water colour artist since shortly after his arrival in Darlington.
He turned to painting fairly late in life and says he was inspired by Sir Winston Churchill’s example and work. Certainly his own style is a quiet one.
Durham University recently gave him the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law. [12]
Arthur Hare died in 1983 aged 85 years. His date of birth was recorded as 31 January 1898. [13]

In his will Arthur left a small legacy to each of his two grandsons, the sons of son Arthur. The residue of his estate, after the payment of all debts owing, was left in equal shares to son Arthur, to his grandson, the son of deceased daughter Margaret, and to Edith Leng, his housekeeper. [15]
