Biography

Sydney was born in 1899 at Kexby, Yorkshire, the son of Charles Albert Hare and Sarah Ellen Hare formerly Barraclough. [1]

Sidney [sic] was baptised on 21 May 1899 at Kexby. His father was then employed as a foreman of a brickyard. [2]

In the 1901 census Sidney [sic] was living with his parents in Kexby. He was aged 1. [3]

School admission records state Sydney Hare, born 19 April 1899, started at Haxby School on 11 April 1904. His father was named as Charles Hare and their address was recorded as Rowntree's Estate [York]. His date of leaving was not recorded. [4]

In 1911 the family was back living in Kexby. Sydney was aged 11 and still attending school. [5]

In a newspaper article published in the Sheffeild Daily Telegraph dated 9 August 1917 regarding the results of examinations held in July that year it was recorded Sydney Hare of Archbishop Holgate’s Grammar School was granted a Senior School Certificate only, without matriculation. [6]

Military records from WWI state Sydney had been in the Army with the 28th London Regiment, Reg. No. 766717, from 17 August 1917 before transferring to the Royal Flying Corps, the air arm of the British Army, on 16 February 1918, No. 319711. On 1 April 1918 the RFC merged with the Royal Naval Air Service to form the Royal Air Force.
On 25 January 1918 Sydney had been found fit to be a pilot. On 16 February 1918 he was posted to SMA [School of Military Aeronautics]. From there he posted to Arm School [Armament School] on 14 April 1918. Sydney was then posted to 8 TDS [Training Depot Station] on 11 May 1918. Finally on 24 February 1919 Sydney was posted to Clipstone, near Mansfield, probably then set up then as a dispersal camp. At that time Sydney was recorded as a Flight Cadet with a trade classification of aviator. He was discharged on 26 March 1919.
Of Sydney himself it was recorded he was born on 19 April 1899 at Kexby, Yorkshire. Prior to joining Sydney had been a student at Archbishop Holgates Grammar School, York from April 1913 to August 1917. His next of kin was named as C. A. Hare of School House, Kexby, later changed to Sycamore House, Kexby. On discharge Sydney's address was recorded as Sycamore House, Kexby.
The only physical description on record stated his height as 5 feet, 7 ¾ inches. [7]

In the 1921 census Sydney was back living with his parents at Kexby. Father Charles A, aged 58, was a brick and tile maker employed by T. B. Lotherington & Son at the brick and tile works, Kexby. Mother Sarah E was aged 59. Brother Herbert E, aged 20, was a brick and tile maker, working with his father. Sister Eva B was aged 23. Sydney, aged 22, was a school teacher. Also living with them was his father's sister Alice Hare. She was aged 46. [8]

Sydney Hare married Dorothy Irene Duggleby on 29 December 1924 at the parish church at Catton with Stamford Bridge, Yorkshire. Their marriage certificate recorded Sydney was a bachelor aged 25 and a schoolmaster. His father was named as Charles Albert Hare, a brick manufacturer. Dorothy was a spinster aged 24. Her father was named as William Coning Hutchinson, a chauffeur. At the time of their marriage Sydney was living at St Thomas, Bedford in Leigh [Lancashire]. and Dorothy at High Catton. Their witnesses were William Coning Hutchinson and Eva Barraclough Hare, Sydney's sister. [9]

The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.
At that time Sydney and Dorothy were residing at 16 Ellerthwaite Road, Windermere, Westmorland. Sydney, born 19 April 1899, was aged 40. He was then a headmaster. Sydney was also a member of the RAF Voluntary Reserve (officers). Dorothy, born 18 February 1900, was aged 39. [10]

Dorothy Irene Hare died in 1981 aged 81 years. Her date of birth was recorded as 18 February 1900. [12]

Sydney Hare died in 1991 aged 92 years. His date of birth was recorded as 19 April 1899. [14]

From the 1991 Index of Wills and Administrations – HARE, Sydney of 462 London Rd Carlisle died 1 May 1991 Probate Newcastle-upon-Tyne 2 July Not exceeding £115000 [15]

His will read -
THIS IS THE LAST WILL and TESTAMENT of me SYDNEY HARE of 462 London Road in the City of Carlisle
1. I REVOKE all former Wills and testamentary dispositions heretofore made by me and DECLARE this to be my last Will
2. I APPOINT my friends Anne Faulkner of 462 London Road Carlisle aforesaid and Geoffrey Norris of Lake Road Bowness-on-Windermere in the County of Cumbria Solicitor to be the Executors and Trustees of this my Will
3. I GIVE the following pecuniary legacies free of all taxes –
(i) To Michele Laybourn of 28 Bulkington Road Shilton near Coventry the sum of TWO HUNDRED POUNDS for her own use and benefit absolutely
(ii) to Mrs. Pauline Faulkner of 462 London Road Carlisle aforesaid the sum of TWO HUNDRED POUNDS for her own use and benefit absolutely
(iii) to my niece Mrs. Barbara Jordan of "St. Edmunds" Eastgate Cawston Norwich the sum of TWO HUNDRED POUNDS for her own use and benefit absolutely
4. I GIVE DEVISE AND BEQUEATH the remainder of my estate both real and personal whatsoever and wheresoever and whether in possession reversion remainder or expectancy and not hereby or by any Codicil hereto otherwise more specifically disposed of (subject to the payment of my just debts funeral and testamentary expenses) to my dear friend the said Anne Faulkner for her own use and benefit absolutely
5. Any Executor or Trustee hereof being a solicitor or other person engaged in any profession or business shall be entitled to charge and be paid all usual professional or other charges for business done services rendered and time spent by him or his firm in the administration of my estate or the trusts hereof including any acts which a Trustee not engaged in any profession or business could have done personally
IN WITNESS whereof I have hereunto set my hand to this my Will this tenth day of April 1981 Sydney Hare

Barbara Jordan was the daughter of Sydney's sister Amelia.
