Sydney was born in 1877 at Barton upon Humber, Lincolnshire, the son of George Hare and Mary Wilkinson. [1]
In the 1881 census Sidney [sic] was living with his parents at Finkle Lane, Barton on Humber. He was aged 4 years. [2]
The family then moved to Kexby, Yorkshire.
In 1891 Sydney was living with his widowed mother at Kexby. He was aged 14 years. [3]
Sydney Hare married Annie Elizabeth Buckton on 2 October 1899 at St. Paul's Church, Kexby. Their marriage certificate recorded Sydney was a bachelor aged 21 and a foreman of a brickyard. His father was named as George Hare, also a foreman of a brickyard. Annie was a spinster aged 20. Her father was named as John Buckton, a farmer. At the time of their marriage Sydney was living in Cawood, Yorkshire and Annie at Kexby. Their witnesses were Mary Jane Gofton [best guess] and John Buckton. [4]
Of interest the Register of Banns for Cawood confirmed banns had been read there on 10, 17 and 24 September.
This couple had nine children named Sydney Edwin Hare born 1901, Clarice Annie Hare born 1902, Vera Hare born 1904, Norah Hare born 1906, Harry Hare born 1907, Ida Mary born 1909, Ronald Hare born 1913, Maurice Hare born 1915 and Harold Hare born 1918. Sydney was born at York, Yorkshire and the younger children at Thirsk, Yorkshire.
In 1901 Sydney and Annie were living at Shaffers Brickyard, York. Sydney, aged 24, was a brickyard labourer. Annie was aged 22 and son Sydney was aged 3 months. [5]
Daughter Norah's birth certificate recorded she was born on 9 March 1906 at Junction Brickyard, Thirsk. [6]
Daughter Ida Mary Hare died in 1910 aged under 1 year. [7]
She was buried on 14 April 1910 at Carlton Miniott, Yorkshire [near Thirsk]. The burial register recorded Ida's last address simply as Thirsk and her age as 7 months. [8]
In 1911 the family was living at Buckyard [Brickyard?] Cottage, Thirsk Junction, Yorkshire. Sydney, aged 34, was the manager at the brick works. Annie was aged 32. Children Sydney, Clarice, Annie, Vera, Norah and Harry were aged 10, 8, 6, 5 and 3 years respectively. [9]
Son Harold Hare died in 1918 in infancy. [10]
He was buried on 2 May 1918 at Carlton Miniott. The burial register recorded Harold's last address as Thirsk Junction and his age as 7 weeks. [11]
In the 1926 to 1929 electoral rolls Sydney and Annie were residing at Brickyard Collages, Gale Lane, Acomb, York. Then from 1930 to 1933 they were residing at The Poplars, Acomb. Children Norah and Harry resided at this address from 1929 to 1933. The address was then amended to The Poplars, 159 Gale Lane. In 1934 and 1935 the residents were Sydney, Annie and son Ronald. Then in 1936 and 1937 Sydney, Annie and son Morris [sic] were living there. And in 1938 the only residents were Sydney and Annie. [12]
Of interest Ronald, wife Margaret and children were living at 159 Gale Lane at the time of the 1939 Register.
The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.
At that time Sydney and Annie were residing at 19 Cromwell Road, York, Yorkshire. Sydney, born 9 March 1877, was aged 62. He was then a manager at a brick works. Annie, born 31 January 1879, was aged 60. [13]
Sydney Hare died in 1949 aged 72 years. [14]
He was buried on 14 April 1949 at Kexby, Yorkshire. The burial register recorded Sydney's last address as 19 Cromwell Rd, York. [15]

Annie E Hare died in 1968 aged 88 years. [17]
Annie Elizabeth Hare was buried on 4 January 1968 at Kexby. The burial register recorded her date of death as 30 December 1967 and her last residence as 19 Orchard Paddock, Haxby, York [home of son Sydney Edwin Hare]. [18]
