Her name is reported as Rachel Hare, but researchers have guessed she might have been Rachel Herr, Rachel Hair, Rachel Head, or Rachel Hood.
Guesses about her parents include:
1. George Hare (c1696-1768/9), of Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
2. Samuel Hair or Hare (c1700-1782), of Berkeley County, (West) Virginia.
3. Thomas Hare.
4. Thomas Hoed, Head or Hood (c1690-c1780), of Berkeley County, (West) Virginia.
Family tradition says she was Creek or perhaps Cherokee (Canavan (1997)). Her great granddaughter Elizabeth Sweet was listed on the 1850 census as a race other than white. Rachel is the only one of Elizabeth's ancestors who could account for Elizabeth having been mixed race.
The 1835 Cherokee Census of Tennessee, although much later, shows James Hare at Ooltewah, Tennessee, with a household of three half-bloods, one of whom could read English. There was also the household of Quatie Hare, wife of Chief John Ross, at Red Clay in McMinn County, Tennessee, with two full-bloods and four half-bloods, three of whom could read English.
Husband Abel Knight. Wife Rachel Hare. Marriage Mar 1740. Buckingham Monthly Meeting, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. [1][2][3] Child: Sarah Knight.
She was not a Quaker at the time of her marriage, but later joined.
Buried New Garden Friends Cemetery, New Garden, Guilford County, North Carolina.
Emigration: 1742 Frederick County, Virginia. [6] 1752 Guilford County, North Carolina. [7]
