"On 18 January 1853 Thomas George Crush married Sarah Anne Hare at St Peter’s Church, Melbourne. They settled in Collingwood and raised a large family of twelve children. Sarah had arrived at Port Phillip on 9th August 1849 on the New Liverpool. She was one of many Irish famine orphan girls sent out from the workhouses to the colony. According to the shipping list, she was from Newry and aged just 16, though on her youngest daughter Harriet’s birth certificate it is stated she was from Dublin. There was a Sarah Anne Hare born in Newry in 1830 to an Owen and Catharine Hare but if this is our ancestress it would make her 19 at the time of her arrival in Australia. She was employed by William Snell of Elizabeth Street in Melbourne after her arrival. Sarah died on 25th September 1895, and is buried with her husband, Thomas Crush (d 28 February 1908) and their eldest son, William in the Melbourne General Cemetery. All that remains now is some brickwork."
